RACISME – Melt ESSEC accueille les étudiants internationaux – Paroles d’Étudiants #3

English Version Below

ENGLISH VERSION

For this third issue of Student Voices, we address the theme of including international students in campus life. Indeed, if students who have done Prepa often get used to being among themselves and sometimes have difficulty integrating international classmates, who sometimes come from very far away to study in France, the language barrier is not the most important one since English is spoken by everyone. We are talking here about Tolerance and Respect for Others in their differences, and therefore about diversity.

The association Melt ESSEC (Multicultural ESSEC Link Together) has made it its fight: to organize events for a greater diversity of our community and to make relationships more fluid. The Secretary General of the association, member of the next BDE Atlanta, presents us his vision.

Can you introduce yourself and your association?
Hello, my name is Edouard Léty, I am currently in the first year of the Master Grande Ecole of ESSEC. Originally from Lorraine, I was in the ECS preparatory class at Kléber high school in Strasbourg. Today I am General Secretary of the MELT association, which aims to better integrate international students from ESSEC both on the school campus and in France in general.

What actions for the respect of others in your association?
In the MELT association, kindness is truly a pillar of the atmosphere, almost a recruitment criterion. I confirm this after consultation with the rest of the members. There is indeed a state of mind that values the respect and integration of others, which makes it possible to build a large, close-knit family to welcome new students.

An example of action?
The events we organize are diverse: they range from international dinners to visits of Paris and trips to discover France.

During the International Week (a week dedicated to the integration of international students) MELT organizes events of all types (exhibitions, concerts, mechanical rodeo, …).

And…Your projects?
We are keen to set up a « buddy system ». This is currently under construction, given the complexity of the action: associating a French buddy with an international student and vice versa. We are counting on the fact that the French student, sometimes already present at Essec for a year, will be able to accompany and transmit the values of the school to an international student who has just arrived.

What is the state of Respect for Others at ESSEC in your opinion?
I have the impression that there is more and more progress. There are still some problems but the BDE is working seriously with the school. At Melt, we think in particular that associations involving students of all nationalities and from all programmes (Grande Ecole, Bachelor’s, Specialised Master’s) are helping to strengthen respect and cohesion within the school and that we really need to push in this direction.

Thanks to Édouard for his testimony.

In these difficult times, we would like to remind VdB how vital solidarity within the ESSEC community is.

Beginning with me: even if we are preoccupied or tense, we must each take care of the quality of our relationships with others, take the time to welcome those who are not doing well by email or on the phone or zoom in :). Check that everyone you know is doing well, especially for those confined to the CERGY campus.

Associations like Melt remind us of this!
